"The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.' " - Matthew 25:40

There's a special appreciation for human life here at Old Town Gifts and Collectibles, because:

- My mother Sheila (who went on to have a 30+-year career as a much-loved junior high and high school teacher) was conceived out of wedlock. The young mother-to-be still opted to give birth to her baby and give it up for adoption. Her baby girl was adopted in 1935 by a wonderful central Illinois farm family, whose surname my son has as his middle name today.

- My father Jack (who became a tenured speech and theatre professor at what is now Missouri State University, where he was instrumental in forming that university's first African-American theatre group, and also taught the future actors John Goodman and Tess Harper) was the first premature baby to ever survive at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Danville, IL, now Provena Good Samaritan. He was no bigger than a squirrel when born, and would have fit in the palm of your hand.

That's why, since each of my parents' tiny lives began under less-than-ideal circumstances, we support Choices4Life out of Houston, TX, USA, which works with mothers who have been victims of rape and have been impregnated, yet who choose to keep their innocent babies. Juda Myers, who runs this ministry, was herself conceived when her mother was gang-raped on a street corner in St. Louis. These are the most vulnerable of the vulnerable, and we're please to help a ministry that helps both these babies and their mothers to move forward with their lives.
